Some quick thoughts about the Olympics, now that they've wrapped...

1) The Michael Phelps stuff was waaaaay over the top. "MY GOD! THEY'RE MAKING HIM SWIM THIS RACE WITH HIS HANDS OUT OF THE WATER, BECAUSE IF HE TOUCHES THE WATER, IT WILL LITERALLY TURN INTO WINE!!!" Congrats on the 8 golds, but pleasedeargod, don't make me ever have to hear about you for 3 hours in a single night again.

2) I think NBC was somewhat bewildered when folks suddenly wanted to see Usain Bolt run. "What? Where's your jingoist pride?"

3) Call it a hunch, but I'm suspecting that the people that were screaming about Liukin getting bumped down to the silver on a series of tiebreaking-calculations against the Chinese gymnast ("The rules need to be changed!!") are also the same people that were, conversely, emphatic that Paul Hamm deserved his gold in 2004, even tho' he only won it because some judge screwed up the math in scoring a South Korean gymnast ("Hey! Rules are rules!").

4) I felt bad for Lolo Jones after the 100 meter hurdles, but was amused by the Aussie runner that took silver, who looked like she'd be told she had won the lottery. Even more amusing was that her win was enough of a surprise that no one had an Aussie flag handy to let her trot around with.

5) Wariner. Seriously. Bag the sunglasses and ridiculous diamond earrings.

6) Yah, the Chinese gymnasts probably weren't 16, but the howling got to sound a bit too sour grapes-y. You still have to compete and win - there's no preordained American right to gold medals in gymnastics.

7) Speaking of, get the impression that Bela Karyoli spends his nights hiding in his basement, wearing tin foil on his head to keep those gosh darn government satellites out of his head? He could make a conspiracy out of lunch order...

8) I appreciate that they mixed in diving to break up the monotony of the holy trinity of gymnastics, swimming, and track & field, but I swear they showed every dive ever taken in the history of man. And then replayed 6 times each. I don't have the attention span for that. Seriously - just a bit of editing, please - you're tapedelaying it 4 days (or whatever) anyway...

And that's all I can think of.
